William’s Career Pivot Through Online Learning

3D Modeller to Drafting Professional

When William Bourke first considered making a career change, he wasn’t a stranger to design.

With a background in 3D modelling and architectural walkthroughs using Blender, William had already developed a strong visual eye. But he wanted more – a qualification that would open new doors in the building design industry.

Thanks to government-subsidised training and a flexible online delivery model, the Certificate IV in Residential Drafting at Built Form Design Academy (BFDA) gave him exactly that.

Choosing a Path That Works

Like many career changers, William had tested the waters before – even beginning a drafting course at TAFE. But it wasn’t quite the right fit. When he discovered BFDA’s Certificate IV, it stood out for its focused content, manageable timeframe, and accessibility.

“I was going to start doing more visualisation work, but then I found out the government would help fund the course, and that made it the right time to do it.”

William enrolled under NSW’s Smart & Skilled funding scheme, which typically covers around 80% of course fees for eligible learners– a game changer for students looking to retrain without a heavy financial burden.

Learning on His Terms

Living on the South Coast, William explained that his learning needs are best suited to a face-to- face learning environment however access to face-to-face learning was limited. He explains that BFDA’s online delivery made the Cert IV accessible.

William discussed how he chose to keep himself on track and ensure he overcame the challenge of online learning.

” I had to treat it like a job – block out hours during the day, stay consistent.”

Despite juggling various part-time jobs, William committed time each week to progressing through course materials. He found real momentum midway through, gaining confidence as each module clicked into place.

Support That Makes a Difference

One of the standout aspects of William’s experience was the direct support he received from the BFDA team.

BFDA provides a range of support to assist students in achieving their goals, He praised the online campus, easy navigation, and extensive video tutorials. The combination of practical resources, feedback on assessments, and access to webinars made a difference.

Looking Forward

Having completed his Certificate IV, William is now connected with the Building Designers Association of Australia (BDAA), giving him access to a growing network of professionals and potential opportunities in the field.

“I’m looking to meet other like-minded people in the industry and eventually pick up some projects or work with an architect.”

His story is a powerful reminder that with the right training, structure, and support, transitioning into a new career is not only possible – it’s rewarding.
