Changing careers can feel overwhelming. However, with the right support and training it is possible to move into an entirely new industry. This is exactly what graduate Mark Byham discovered after completing his Certificate IV in Residential Drafting at Built Form Design Academy (BFDA).  

A Career Shift After 30 Years in IT 

Before studying with BFDA, Mark had a long career in electronics and IT. He managed teams, ran his own business, and worked with major organisations. Yet, as technology shifted to the cloud, his work dried up. At the same time, he faced challenges with chronic fatigue, which made traditional work even harder. 

Nevertheless, Mark had always been interested in building and renovations. Over the years, he renovated homes and even helped a friend build a house. Therefore, when he discovered that residential drafting could combine his passion for design with his technical skills, he decided to take the leap.

Mark researched different options, including local TAFE courses. However, he realised those programs would require travel and rigid schedules. Instead, BFDA offered a flexible, self-directed, online course. This allowed him to fit study around his lifestyle, even on days when chronic fatigue made it difficult to keep up. 

In addition, Mark appreciated the tailored support. He noted that trainers provided feedback, video responses, and encouragement throughout the course. As a result, he gained the confidence to complete projects he once thought were beyond his abilities. 

Learning Outside His Comfort Zone 

Initially, Mark thought his IT background would make learning drafting software easy. Yet he quickly discovered that the work was highly technical and required patience and persistence. Even so, he embraced the challenge. 

One highlight was completing a mock development application, which simulated submitting plans to council. Mark described this as a proud moment because it gave him a real sense of achievement. In fact, it made him excited about one day seeing his own drawings built in real life. 

From Graduate to Business Owner 

Since finishing his studies, Mark has already taken steps toward starting his own drafting business. He registered the name Residential Drafting Services, set up a professional website, and even received his first quote request within 24 hours. Although the project did not proceed, the experience gave him the confidence to begin building his new career. 

Therefore, his story demonstrates how the course can open doors not only to employment but also to entrepreneurship. 

Advice for New Students 

Looking back, Mark encourages future students not to worry about being perfect on the first attempt. Submitting work, receiving feedback, and making improvements are all part of the learning process. Moreover, he stresses the importance of resilience, since the drafting and design industry often requires reworking drawings based on client or council feedback.
