Construction Family Roots to New Career Pathways

At Built Form Design Academy (BFDA), we see students join us from all walks of life some with years of industry experience, others brand new to drafting and design. One of our recent graduates of the Certificate IV in Residential Drafting shares her story that will resonate with many: balancing work, family commitments, and the challenges of starting something new, all while building a strong foundation for the future.

Discovering BFDA During a Time of Change

Like many, this student’s plans after finishing school were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. With traditional gap year options off the table, she looked for opportunities closer to home. Having grown up in a family business connected to the construction industry, the world of design and drafting already felt familiar.

When her family came across BFDA, the flexibility of a self-directed, online program stood out. Unlike other training providers, BFDA’s approach meant she could learn at her own rhythm, while continuing to work part-time.

Overcoming Challenges and Gaining Confidence

Learning new software such as ArchiCAD was no small task, especially without an instructor physically present. But with the help of detailed manuals, online resources, and BFDA’s guidance, she developed both confidence and technical skill.

What she valued most was not just the course content, but the supportive learning environment. From personalised feedback to additional study resources, she felt the Academy went “above and beyond” to ensure her success.

“The comments and feedback weren’t just about making corrections they made me think differently and helped me really understand the software.”

Building a Future in Residential Drafting

Graduating from the Certificate IV has opened new pathways. With industry knowledge already in her background, the qualification has given her the formal skills to build a career in drafting, whether through working for a business or pursuing further study, such as a diploma.

Importantly, she also learned the value of time management and dedication. Whether studying on days off or fitting in coursework during lunch breaks, her discipline paid off. Seeing those “satisfactory” results appear was a point of pride and motivation throughout her studies.

A Story for Future Students

This graduate’s experience highlights three important messages for anyone considering study with BFDA:

At BFDA, we’re proud to celebrate stories like this one stories of students who take charge of their futures with courage, commitment, and creativity. While this graduate has chosen to remain anonymous, her journey reflects what so many of our student’s experience: the chance to turn curiosity and ambition into real career opportunities.
