However, a medical condition meant he could no longer continue in physically demanding roles. Faced with that reality, he made a deliberate decision to redirect his career and pursue one of his passions.
“I had to reskill essentially… and I thought I would embrace my interests and that brought me to here”
Focused on future proofing his career residential drafting was a considered move toward something he wanted, a way to remain connected to construction and design while working within new constraints.
“I like construction and building… Out of all the aspects within the industry, this was what would interest me the most.”
Why the Cert IV in Residential Drafting
Before enrolling, Aaron researched extensively. Flexibility in delivery was important. He needed a structure that allowed him to manage his time around personal commitments while still engaging in industry-aligned training.
“I wouldn’t have been able to do the course otherwise.”
The Cert IV in Residential Drafting offered structured, self-directed learning supported by clear course material, fortnightly live sessions, and accessible educators.
“I found the course notes very well structured… I found it very, very directional.”
Having completed postgraduate study, Aaron understood the difference between dense academic theory and purposeful instruction. The material was practical, logically sequenced, and aligned with real world expectations.
Building Technical Capability
Aaron chose to learn Revit (3D CAD software) as part of the Certificate IV in residential Drafting also learning about construction detailing, drawing sets and the council documentation processes.
“I feel like I have a skill set now I am able to problem solve. I didn’t realise that there was more than one way to kind of make something in CAD.”
This ability to problem-solve within CAD extended beyond coursework. Aaron began experimenting independently and found the knowledge transferable.
“I found that the skills were completely transferable and I feel confident in my ability, however I am still learning.”
Throughout the course there is an emphasis on precision and workflow. Accuracy comes first and speed develops with repetition.
A Shift in Perspective
Partway through the qualification, Aaron noticed a change in how he viewed the built environment.
“It’s opened up my perception… You can spot whether something’s a good design or a bad design straight away.”
Understanding detailing, proportion, and construction logic sharpened his judgement. He also realised drafting was not simply redrawing someone else’s ideas.
“I was quite surprised by the amount of freedom that you have as a building designer as well in the design process.”
That discovery expanded his understanding of the building design career pathway.
Moving Forward
Aaron plans to begin applying for drafting roles in the new year, focusing on building a considered portfolio and approaching potential employers.
The Cert IV in Residential Drafting has given him a technical foundation grounded in industry expectations.
For those considering a residential drafting course in Australia, his experience highlights what matters, structured delivery, skill development, and a qualification that builds real capability.
