You don’t need a traditional academic path to succeed. With the right tools and support, young people can start their careers earlier than most expect.

Beau didn’t wait to finish high school to follow his passion.

At just 16 years old, he made the bold decision to leave Year 10 and start a new chapter. His goal? To become a residential drafter. Today, Beau is working part-time in the Illawarra region, putting his skills to use and building real homes, one project at a time.

His story shows that you don’t need a traditional academic path to succeed. With the right tools and support, young people can start their careers earlier than most expect.

Childhood Passion Becomes Career Focus

Beau always had a creative streak. He spent hours with LEGO, building detailed models and sketching floor plans. Eventually, his parents recognized this growing interest and encouraged him to pursue drafting.

After a positive work experience placement, Beau enrolled in the Certificate IV in Residential Drafting at Built Form Design Academy (BFDA). From the beginning, he felt he had found the right fit.

A Flexible Learning Path for Future Designers

Unlike many teens, Beau didn’t follow the crowd to Year 11 or TAFE instead he chose an online course that gave him the flexibility to study at home, volunteer, and hold a part-time job. At first, online learning felt unfamiliar. However he quickly adapted with support from the BFDA team.

“At the start I found the online aspect a little tricky,” Beau says. “But after a few months, I got the hang of it. The team was always there when I had questions.”

This flexibility and self directed nature makes BFDA’s course a great option for school leavers, regional students, and even those balancing work or family responsibilities.

Turning Study into Real-World Work

One of the best parts of Beau’s journey is how seamlessly he moved from study to employment. A friend in the building industry needed drafting support and thanks to Beau’s skills in ArchiCAD (the software he trained with), he was ready for the challenge.

“The fundamentals I learned at BFDA set me up really well,” he explains. “Every business has its own way of doing things, but the core knowledge stays the same.”

Time Management Made the Difference

However Beau’s journey wasn’t without obstacles. His family moved during the course, and he had to juggle shifting routines. Even so, he created weekly study goals and stuck with them. As a result, he finished his qualification in around 18 months a strong pace for someone starting straight from school.
