Evan’s Inspiring Journey to a New Career

When the pandemic hit, Evan faced a turning point. After years of repetitive work in a warehouse, he was unfulfilled. During the isolation, he found time to reflect on his future and realized he wanted more. Inspired by the growing need for housing and his dream of building tiny homes, he set his sights on becoming a drafter. This new direction would not only allow him to design his own projects but also pave the way for his own business.

Discovering a New Career Path

Before the pandemic, Evan spent five years working in a busy warehouse, handling picking and packing tasks. But as work became scarce, he began to question his career path. During the lockdowns, he used his free time to explore his interests. Seeing the housing shortage and wanting to make a difference, he decided to pursue drafting. This choice aligned with his vision of designing tiny homes and eventually starting his own business.

Online Learning with BFDA

Evan chose to study drafting online with Built Form Design Academy (BFDA). The flexibility of online learning suited his lifestyle perfectly. He created a routine that worked for him—starting his day at 6 AM, studying with coffee and his favorite tunes, and balancing his learning with his work as a DoorDash driver. This flexible schedule allowed him to transition smoothly between his job and his education.

“I love the flexibility,” Evan said. “Studying in my room with relaxing music helps me focus.” The online platform let him learn at his own pace, access detailed notes on Canvas, and connect with other students through Facebook. This setup not only made studying convenient but also prepared him for the independence needed in the drafting industry.

Overcoming Challenges and Building Confidence

Evan faced challenges along the way, including moments of frustration and self-doubt. One tough situation involved a software issue that took hours to solve. Instead of giving up, he learned the value of stepping back and approaching problems with a fresh perspective. This experience taught him resilience and problem-solving—skills crucial in both learning and real-world drafting projects.

“There were times when I hesitated to ask for help,” he admitted, “but I realized it’s okay to reach out when needed.” With support from instructors and peers, his confidence grew. The course taught him technical skills while also fostering discipline and perseverance.

Real-World Skills and Industry Connections

The course closely mirrored real-world drafting practices. Evan learned to create precise, compliant drawings and manage project timelines using simple tools like Excel. Collaborative sessions, like “Design After Dark,” offered opportunities to share ideas and receive feedback.

Networking also played a big role in his journey. By joining BFDA’s support groups and engaging with the Building Designers Association of Australia, Evan gained industry insights and made valuable connections. “It’s incredible how much you can learn just by talking to others,” he shared. These connections not only enriched his learning but also opened doors to job opportunities.

A Bright Future Ahead

As Evan completes his course, he looks forward to a fulfilling career in drafting and building design. His journey—from warehouse work to mastering drafting—shows that career changes are possible at any stage of life. His story is an inspiration for anyone looking to pursue a new path.
