A long-standing passion for design
Although Silka began her professional life in education, design had always been part of her journey. During Years 11 and 12, she studied housing design, technical graphics, and computer design, and when it came time to apply for university, she was accepted into both architecture and teaching.
“Through my college years, I really loved housing and architecture. I applied for architecture and education and got into both.
Ultimately, she chose teaching but the interest in housing and architecture never disappeared. Years later, as the demands of teaching intensified, Silka began reassessing her future.
“It was balancing teaching with life, and that’s what drew me to look for an alternative profession.”
Choosing BFDA: flexibility without university
When exploring her options, Silka knew she didn’t want to return to university. Local TAFE options at the time didn’t offer the Certificate IV, and flexibility was critical.
BFDA stood out for its part-time and full-time options, online delivery, and clear pathway into the industry.
“I was relieved to know that when I found BFDA, I didn’t have to go back to university. It could be done as a certificate and then progress further into a diploma.”
This flexibility allowed Silka to adjust her work arrangements, eventually moving into a role that allowed her to “leave work at work” while completing her studies.
Support, feedback, and building confidence
Returning to study after years in the workforce came with challenges particularly learning new software and re-establishing study habits. However, Silka credits BFDA’s support structure with helping her succeed.
“The feedback was fantastic, clear and concise. It felt like it was setting you up to succeed rather than floundering around trying to work out what you did wrong.”
She also highlighted the responsiveness of trainers and technical support, especially when working through Archicad and assignment requirements.
While some aspects like navigating council requirements were recognised as something best learned through industry experience, Silka felt the course provided strong foundations and realistic preparation for working life.
Studying from Tasmania with confidence
Based in Tasmania, Silka’s experience also speaks directly to regional and interstate students considering online study. Through webinars, Facebook groups, and one-on-one support, she remained connected despite studying remotely.
She attended industry events locally and is now focused on building connections as she prepares to enter the residential drafting industry.
Silka shared that while finishing her studies felt like “starting fresh,” she recognised the importance of reaching out, networking, and building a support system within the industry.
