At Built Form Design Academy (BFDA), we know that great design education starts with great educators. That’s why we’re proud to have Vanessa Couzens leading the way as our Training Manager. With over 30 years of experience in both the design industry and education, Vanessa brings a rare mix of creativity, technical skill, and real-world insight to everything she does. 

A Career Built on Design  

Vanessa has been immersed in the world of design since the 1990s. With formal qualifications in architecture from UTS, the University of Canberra, and QUT. She has worked across Australia and the UK on projects ranging from boutique apartments to large-scale commercial developments. 

From Drafting Tables to Digital Classrooms 

With over a decade of experience as a design educator, Vanessa has shaped the learning journey of countless students. As our Training Manager, she assists in the development of course content for the Certificate IV in Residential Drafting and Diploma of Building Design. Whether it’s writing assessments, delivering engaging lessons, or guiding students through their projects, Vanessa brings knowledge, patience, and a genuine passion for design education to every interaction. 

Industry Knowledge? She’s Got It! 

Vanessa doesn’t just teach design she lives it. She’s the founder of Bad Kitty Design Services and continues to work on residential and commercial projects. Her industry experience ensures that everything she teaches is relevant, up-to-date, and rooted in real-world practice. She’s also a member  of the Building Designers Association of Australia (BDAA), keeping her connected to the evolving design landscape. 

Giving Back to the Design Community 

Outside the classroom, Vanessa has spent nearly two decades volunteering with the Australian Architecture Association. She’s led architecture tours, trained other volunteers, and even edited their monthly magazine ‘All About Architecture’.
